This course will explore major issues in the Headwaters of the Missouri river – the Jefferson, Madison and Gallatin - and the influences on the Missouri has downstream into two-thirds of our nation. Through a lively mix of field tours, discussions and hands-on activities participants will be instructed in methods to address the theme “Using local insights of the Gallatin, Jefferson and Madison for connecting students to their watershed.” The workshop experience will lead teachers through all learning stages, from awareness to action via the development of a thematic unit on the watersheds to bring the lessons learned back to the classroom or learning environment. Issues on the three rivers include water rights, drought mitigation, recreation economics and impacts, nutrient effects on water quality, groundwater use, natural versus man-made arsenic contamination, historic mining and settlement and the increasing pressures of development.
