The network of centers is authorized under the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act, and funded and coordinated through the Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water of the US Environmental Protection Agency. In Federal fiscal year 2002 total funding was $5 million. Many of the centers have project partners that provide substantial matching funds, equipment or labor.
